Quilt Along FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How much instruction will be given for beginners?

A: I will have a few walk through videos that have both visual and voice instructions. They'll walk through the basic steps and I'll comment on how I sew FPP. The first few weeks will start with easier blocks, to aid in the mastering the basics.

Q: Will every block have a step by step walkthrough?

A: No. While I'd love to have that level of detail, I also still have a day job and limited time. By the time more blocks are introduced, a beginner should have the basic skills to continue on their own.

Q: What if I'm traveling during part or all of the quilt along? What if I join late? Will I miss anything important?

A: That's no problem! All blocks will be posted to the Nerdy Quilter website, which can be accessed anytime after the release date. These blocks will remain free for use, regardless of when you decide to sew them.

Q: What if I don't like a block? For example, if I'm not a fan of spiders, do I have to include it?

A: You can pick and choose which blocks you want to include. This is a completely mix and match quilt, where any and all blocks can be substituted for one another. This also applies to the layout each shelf AND the final finished size of your quilt. The quilt and blocks are extremely customizable!

Q: Will any fabric bundles be available for purchase directly from you? What about fabric kits?

A: Coming Soon! I will have some fat quarter bundles for sale as well as black fabric with stars, which would be perfect for the background fabric.

Q: How much fabric will I need?

A: The amount of fabric used is highly dependant on the final size of the quilt (how many blocks are made) and which blocks are included. As a general guideline, plan on 1/8 - 1/4 yard of background fabric per 10" block. For example, if your final quilt uses 12 blocks, you'll need roughly 1.5-3 yards (12/8 = 1.5 & 12/4 = 3). This is a highly conservative estimate, but I would always rather have extra fabric that run out partway through.

A: For the "content" of the blocks (such as books, characters, etc.) I recommend scraps. These could be from your personal stash or from fabric scrap bundles at your local quilt store. Each block is 1/8 yard (fat eighth) and 1/4 yard (fat quarter) friendly for the characters / content.

Q: What size are the blocks?

A: Most blocks are a finished size of 10" x 10" (10.5" with unfinished seam allowance). I find it easiest to square these blocks with a 10.5" acrylic ruler (to ensure the block is completely square). Coming Soon to the Nerdy Quilter Online Store.

A: A few of the blocks in the quilt along will finish 5" x 5" or 20" x 10". The 5" blocks can be used in the final quilt layout (top corners, below the round part of the shelf) or combined with some of the standard book blocks - a video will be made to explain this process. The 20" wide blocks can be counted as a "double" block, and assembled / arranged in the final layout accordingly.

Q: How can I share photos with others participating in the quilt along?

A: Use #FantasyFaeQuiltAlong and #NerdyQuilterDesigns on Instagram to share your work and see what others have done! You can also join the Nerdy Quilter Designs Facebook Group to share your works. This is a private Facebook group, no one outside of the group will see your posts (if your making the quilt as a gift, for example).

Q: Will any giveaways be part of the quilt along?

A: Yes! I have several fun items that are Fantast/ Fae and sewing themed I plan on giving away through random drawings throughout the quilt along. Additional details for these giveaways are still pending.

Q: Will any other blocks, that aren't shown above, be released as part of the quilt along?

A: Maybe. I typically like to design blocks when the creative bug hits, but I can't always tell when that's going to be. If extra blocks are designed, but not shown, they will be released as a surprise at the end of the quilt along, or maybe even throughout!

Q: Are these Fantasy & Fae Bookcase blocks for sale?

A: No, these blocks are inspired by several amazing artists and are free for personal and non-profit use only. By participating in the quilt along and sewing these patterns, you agree to the following Terms of Use: all free patterns shared on nerdyquilter.com are for personal and non-profit use ONLY. That means no selling the patterns themselves, PHOTOS, physical projects made using these patterns (including but not limited to: commissions, custom work, no selling on Etsy, Ebay, craft shows, etc), or for-profit classes using these patterns.

Q: Can I add other blocks (not designed by Nerdy Quilter) to my quilt and still participate in the quilt along?

A: Absolutely! Feel free to customize your quilt as much as you want! This could include adding other Free Nerdy Quilter bookcase blocks that are different themes (for example, some Disney or Mario Kart bookcase blocks), for purchase Nerdy Quilter bookcase blocks (Science-themed blocks, or a block from a different designer / self designed block. This is supposed to be fun, I'm not worried about following strict rules.

Q: Will there be any spoilers for any fantasy books in this quilt along?

A: Maybe. There are bound to be some spoilers revealed in the quilt along for several of the SJM book series and some others. Participate in the quilt along at your own risk.

Q: Will any instructions, written or verbal, be available in languages other than English?

A: No. I will try my best to include text that can be copied/pasted into an online translator. However, I do not speak any additional languages besides English.

Q: What if I have a question that isn't listed above and hasn't been answered in other quilt along communications?

A: Submit a question in the form below with your question. I'll get back to you personally (it may be a slightly delayed response) as well as update the FAQ sheet to help others.
